Overview
Rail traction and high-voltage direct-current transmission are among the most demanding applications in power electronics. The environment combines high voltage, high current, high dv/dt and severe electromagnetic interference, and the equipment must run for decades with minimal maintenance. In this setting the gate driver is not a commodity: it is the component that isolates the control electronics from the power stage, protects the module during a fault and keeps switching clean enough to meet EMC requirements. Firstack digital gate drivers were developed for exactly this class of high-voltage duty, and BeiLuo supplies them with genuine traceability and FAE support.
Traction Inverter
A modern traction converter converts the DC link into variable-frequency three-phase AC for the traction motor. IGBT modules in the high-power package at 3300 V are widely used, and each switch needs a driver that can deliver high drive power, provide robust isolation and survive the harsh environment. The 1FSD08110 is a plug-and-play driver with an 8 W drive power, a 110 A peak output and an optical-fibre interface. The fibre gives galvanic isolation and immunity to electromagnetic interference, so the fault signal reaches the controller reliably, and when no PWM signal is present the gate stays in the negative-voltage off state, which is a key safety feature.
Protection for Traction
A traction inverter sees short circuits and rapid load changes. The 1FSD08110 provides VCE short-circuit monitoring, a di/dt protection path, undervoltage lockout, soft shutdown, digitally dynamic advanced active clamping and multi-level turn-off. Soft shutdown reduces the gate voltage slowly during a fault so the fault current falls without an overvoltage spike, and active clamping limits the turn-off peak at high current. Together they protect a very expensive module.
HVDC and High-Voltage Converters
High-voltage DC transmission and other converter stations use IGBT modules in the high-voltage package at 4500 V and 6500 V. At these levels the turn-off spike grows with the bus voltage and the loop inductance, and a single spike can destroy the device, so active clamping is essential. The HV1027P provides a 3 W drive power, a 27 A peak output and the protection set that a high dv/dt environment demands, including VCE detection, soft shutdown, active clamping and multi-level turn-off.
Press-Pack Stacks
High-power stacks use press-pack modules up to 4500 V. These modules have specific mechanical and electrical requirements, and the SK08110 driver solution meets them with a master board plus configurable slave board architecture, a highly robust DC/DC that withstands a gate-emitter short, di/dt protection and active clamping. The robust DC/DC is important because a conventional open-loop driver supply is the most common failure point of a gate driver.
Validation with BeiLuo
The BeiLuo FAE team helps configure the slave board for the module, set the gate resistors and protection, and confirm the design on the bench. For rail and HVDC projects, that support shortens the path from design to a reliable, long-life converter.
